Principle Research Engineer - Fuel Feed (Hydrogen)

Hydrogen

  • Location Icon England, Bristol
  • Work Type Icon Contract or Temp

Job Description

The project is to design and develop fuel systems in support of hydrogen powered aircraft.

As a Senior Research Engineer specializing in hydrogen fuel systems, your role designing fuel feed systems, selecting appropriate components, and ensuring efficient and reliable delivery of hydrogen fuel to end-users or hydrogen-based applications. This position requires expertise in mechanical engineering, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and hydrogen fuel technology.

Key responsibilities will include;

System Design and Development
  • Design and develop hydrogen fuel feed systems, including storage tanks, piping networks, valves, regulators, and pressure relief devices, tailored to specific application requirements.
Component Selection and Specification:
  • Select appropriate components and materials for hydrogen fuel feed systems based on factors such as pressure ratings, flow rates, compatibility with hydrogen, and safety considerations.
  • Specify system components, including tanks, valves, fittings, and connectors, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.
Mixed Phase Fluid Dynamic Analysis
  • Utilize computational fluid dynamics (CFD), finite element analysis (FEA), and system simulation tools to assess the performance and behaviour the fuel feed system specifically attending to the transition from liquid storage condition to gaseous use condition.
  • Predict system efficiency, range, endurance, and environmental impact to inform design decisions and performance optimization efforts.
Regulatory Compliance:
  • Ensure compliance with aviation regulations, industry standards, and safety requirements governing the design, certification, and operation of hydrogen fuel systems in aerospace vehicles.
  • Interface with regulatory agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to facilitate certification and approval processes.
Risk Assessment and Safety Analysis:
  • Conduct risk assessments and safety analyses to identify potential hazards associated with hydrogen fuel systems and develop mitigation strategies to ensure safe operation.
  • Implement safety features, fail-safe mechanisms, and emergency procedures to minimize risks and protect personnel, passengers, and assets.
Essential Skills:
  • Eng / M.Sc im Mechanical or Chemical engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in aerospace engineering, with a focus on fuel feed systems especially Hydrogen as a fuel.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and regulations related to hydrogen fuel technology, such as ISO 14687, SAE J2719, and NFPA 2.
  • Specialized knowledge of hydrogen fuel technology, including storage, distribution, fuel cells, and combustion processes.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Strong understanding of aviation regulations, certification processes, and safety standards relevant to hydrogen fuel systems and aerospace vehicles.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to innovate, optimize, and troubleshoot complex aerospace systems.
  • Amesim / Thermo-fluid modelling for mixed phase cryogenics fluid simulation and thermos-fluid dynamics.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and interact with stakeholders at all levels.
Advantageous Skills:
  • MATLAB
  • Experience of cryogenic systems and components.
  • Amesim / Thermo-fluid modelling for mixed phase cryogenics fluid simulation and thermos-fluid dynamics.
  • Fuel Cells and liquid gas modelling.
  • CATIA
