Project DescriptionWe are working with a leading Aerospace company who are working to develop hydrogen powered aircraft design capability.
We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer who will be responsible for designing and developing ultra-light weight electric motors for aerospace propulsion application in hydrogen fuel cell powered aircraft. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mechanical engineering, particularly in electric motor drive technology and mass reduction.
Responsibilities.
- Optimize motor components for weight savings.
- Conduct research and evaluation of lightweight materials suitable for electric motor applications.
- Assess material properties, including strength, stiffness, thermal conductivity, and fatigue resistance, to ensure suitability for motor components.
- Redesign motor components, such as stator assemblies, rotor structures, housings, and cooling systems, to incorporate lightweight materials and innovative geometries.
- Develop novel manufacturing techniques, such as additive manufacturing or advanced machining processes, to produce lightweight motor components with complex shapes and optimized structures.
Essential Skills
- B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Master's degree or Ph.D. preferred.
- Extensive experience in mechanical engineering in complex multi-physics environment, particularly in optimizing designs for weight reduction.
- Strong understanding of materials science principles and experience with lightweight materials, including composites, alloys, and polymers.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes, including casting, machining, injection moulding, and additive manufacturing.
- Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) software for structural and thermal analysis.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively to overcome design challenges.
- Effective communication skills, with the ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams and communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Familiarity with industry standards and regulations related to electric motors and lightweight materials.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality, innovative solutions within project constraints.
- Good understanding of electric motor design and fuel cell operations.
Advantageous Skills - FEM Tools such as ANSYS and COMSOL Multiphysics
- CATIA
- Aerospace design experience.
- Electric Motor design experience outside Aerospace (e.g. F1)
- Topology Optimization.
- Parametric Design and Optimisation
- CFD / Amesim.
- DfAM (Design for additive manufacture).
